Westerbeke & Universal Engines
Westerbeke and Universal Engines. BAD!!!

These guys did not pay a warranty claim fully. We installed a brand new engine/transmission in a customers boat and within 10 hours (first month)on the way to Oceanside it failed. This company first tried to say we did not add oil, which we had 3 independent people verify that the oil was topped. Then they stalled and hedged and hawed. They never returned phone calls. Worst was Bob Bizente in Massachusetts, who seems to have final say and would not call me back, the customer or the dealer. Ever. We paid for the customer repair immediately and got them on their way. After all they were stranded in another port through no fault of their own. It was gross negligence on Westerbeke's part! Months later, after a third party analysis of the situation put the blame on something in the manufacturing process by Westerbeke, they finally paid part of the claim, shortchanging us almost $1000 on the payment. They said things like... "We won't pay diagnosis time". And "We won't pay crane charge (to haul it out and in)". Or "You expedited things and that cost extra" (I guess we should have made the customer wait for months with a boat in another port, letting them pay tansient slip fees) etc etc. I have heard of another situation in San Diego where they never paid the claim on another brand new engine. I would watch out for these guys. Next time I would use a Beta engine. Their web site is http://www.betamarinenc.com/
